Posterior Composite Hands-On

This hands-on course aims to update the general practitioner on a variety of topics that affect the biological response and longevity of posterior composite restorations. This course will increase your knowledge on the different bonding protocols as well as the stress reducing direct composite restoration technique (SRDC). In addition, participants will gain insight into the management of large Class II that require cusp build-up, decision making between packable and bulk-fill composites and advanced matrix systems techniques.

8:00 a.m: Posterior Composite Part I: Introduction, Biological Considerations in Operative Dentistry, Pre-operative Occlusal Analysis, Field Isolation (Iso-vac, Rubber Dam, Ligature), Cavity Preparation and Design – Dr. Mario F. Romero  

9:45 a.m: Break  

10 a.m: Posterior Composite Part II: Selection of Bonding Protocol, Standard, Sectional and Customized Matrix System, Centripetal Build-Up Technique, Successive Cusp Build-Up Technique, Advanced Staining, SRDC Technique, Finishing and Polishing – Dr. Mario F. Romero  

Noon: Lunch (Boxed lunch provided)  

12:45 p.m: Clinical Videos and Q&A Session: Real Clinical Cases will be presented in a video format, Discussion will be encouraged, Q&A time during the discussion – Dr. Mario F. Romero  

2 p.m: Break  

2:15 p.m: Hands-On Large Class I: Successive Cusp Build-up and Staining – Dr. Mario F. Romero and Dr. Fernando Haddock  

3:45 p.m: Hands-On Large Class II: Centripetal and Successive Build-up Technique – Dr. Mario F. Romero and Dr. Fernando Haddock

Speaker Information
Course Director:Mario F. Romero, DDS, Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation and Course Director of Esthetics in Restorative Dentistry at DCG. Dr. Romero received his DDS from the University of Guayaquil (Ecuador) School of Dentistry in 1995. He completed a two year Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program at the University of Rochester, Eastman Institute for Oral Health where he was granted the Handleman Award for Excellence. He attended the Dawson Academy and is the author of the book Physiologic Basis of Occlusion and its Clinical Applications published by Bausch, Germany. He maintained a private practice with emphasis in Restorative and Esthetic Dentistry for 15 years prior to joining The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University in 2013.

Assistant Course DirectorFernando J. Haddock, DDS, Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation at DCG; he received his DDS from Marquette University School of Dentistry in 1991 and maintained his private practice for 20 years. He joined the University Of Puerto Rico School Of Dental Medicine in 1992 as an Assistant Professor teaching undergraduate dental students at both preclinical and clinical levels in the disciplines of Esthetic Dentistry, Operative Dentistry and Dental Anatomy and Occlusion. He is a Diplomat of the American Association of Dental Consultants. Dr. Haddock served as the Director of Dental Continuing Education for the UPR School of Dental Medicine prior to joining The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University in 2014.

OBJECTIVES
Following completion of the course, the participant should be able to:
  1. Recognize the key determinants of biological considerations that are essential in restorative dentistry.
  2. Select an isolation technique compatible with bonding procedures.
  3. Recognize occlusal instability signs (risk factors) and plan ahead the occlusion for best protection of these direct composite restorations.
  4. Select the appropriate resin composite system based on the functional needs of the case.
  5. Recognize the need for a base or liner prior to final restoration.
  6. Select the bonding material and protocol for the restoration depending on the clinical demands.
  7. Recognize the benefits of the centripetal, successive cusp build-up, and stress reducing direct composite restoration (SRDC) techniques for ideal esthetics to maximize the longevity of the restoration.
